I came to BYU because I knew I would be in a great environment. I had heard about the "BYU experience" and felt like it was something I didn't want to miss. I knew at BYU I would be challenged academically, fed spiritually, and socially surrounded by wonderful people. I felt like I would fit well.
One of my challenges during my freshman year was learning not to be intimidated by my teachers. For some reason, in a class of 400, I found myself felling unimportant and hidden. I never raised my hand because I just felt intimidated. I enjoyed the personal relationship I had with my teachers in high school and missed that at first. With experience here at BYU I have come to see that every professor is sincerely interested in you. They want to know you, you just need to talk to them; they're so nice! Halfway through my first semester I went into my classes and make it a goal to raise my hand to comment or ask a question at least once before the end. Even after I would comment just one time, I always felt connected in my classes. This goal is great for anyone and helped me get over the intimidation I originally felt in large classrooms and with unfamiliar teachers.
