BYU has always seemed like my school. When I was young, my dad and I would watch BYU football games together. He’d tell me stories about the great BYU quarterbacks Steve Young, Jim McMahon, and Robbie Bosco during the commercial breaks. Sometimes, he’d talk about the great classes he’d taken and the wonderful teachers he’d had. I was conditioned to come to BYU since I was a child.
Even though I had always thought I would come here, I started to wonder whether BYU was the right place for me to go when I began my senior year of high school. I worried that I wouldn’t get in and I also wondered if I would fit in with the students there. I felt, however, that this was definitely the right place to go. When I got here, I fell in love with the school. There is so much to see and do and so many fascinating people to talk to. I hope you love it here as much as I do.
I completed my freshman year before I left to serve a mission in Manchester, England. That year was difficult for me. I found myself struggling to focus on school work when it seemed like my studies were much less important than my missionary preparation. Unfortunately, it took me some time to realize that the discipline required to be a great student is valuable for mission preparation. I realized that working hard during your first year of school is an important way to prepare for a mission. Regardless of whether you are planning to go on a mission or not, I hope that you will make the most of your first semester.
