How will you begin your BYU experience? This summer, join over five thousand BYU freshman in a new academic tradition! This year, we’ll all be reading Learning in the Light of Faith. Learning in the Light of Faith is a collection of lectures that were given to students in the BYU Honors program. The editor, President Henry B. Eyring, noted that these lectures help to paint “a portrait of the disciple-scholar, students or scholars who seek to prepare to serve God through their studies.” As you read, you’ll find insights that will help you as you begin your journey toward disciple-scholarship. Remember that your first semester at BYU will be an important time for you to cultivate deep spiritual and academic roots, and Learning in the Light of Faith will help you develop the habits you need to hit the ground running at BYU. Being a disciple-scholar requires you to be an active member of a learning community, and we’ve planned tons of activities to help you get involved. Throughout the summer, you’ll be able to share your thoughts with freshman readers all over the world on our BYU-moderated summer reading mailing list. We’ll also have special lectures from BYU disciple-scholars throughout the fall semester. And make sure you take your book with you on vacation this summer—we’ll be having a photo contest that asks you to show off your book! We hope that you’ll become a disciple-scholar while attending BYU. We look forward to talking about Learning in the Light of Faith with you at New Student Orientation and in your first-year classes. Learning in the Light of Faith has been reprinted especially for BYU and is available for $10 from the BYU Bookstore. |
| Note: On March 21st, 2008, Elder Bruce C. Hafen of the First Quorum of the Seventy of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spoke to the Neil A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship. His presentation, entitled "Reason, Faith, and the Things of Eternity," complements the ideas presented in Learning in the Light of Faith. We invite you to read it as you begin the road toward disciple-scholarship. |
