Hey Cougars,

It can be hard to know what tech you need for college. The Office of First-Year Experience has a How to BYU page to help you figure that out. Click HERE to learn more or keep reading for tech highlights.

Software you should get.

BYU Recommendations
You should probably get word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications. Microsoft has great offers on these products for students, and Google includes these as well in their services.

Free From BYU
Get Microsoft Office 365 for FREE from BYU. This package includes Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, OneDrive, and more. For a step-by-step of how to download the program, click
HERE.

BYU Store is an authorized Apple retailer and offers a wide variety of software and hardware products at a helpful academic discount. Click
HERE to check it out.

Computers
Generally, a computer with at least 4GB of RAM that can run Microsoft Office (or equivalent) is sufficient for college classes. However, some majors require specific hardware. You can search the web with the phrase "BYU Laptop Requirements" to find laptop requirements for some of BYU's most popular majors. Then, contact your college advisement center to make sure you don't miss anything.

Find a Computer
You can use computer labs on campus, rent a laptop, or buy one.  The Office of IT rents out PC and Mac laptops (first-come, first-serve). IT will have tents sent up in each housing area during housing check-in or students can go to 104 Ellsworth Building. If you want to buy a computer, the BYU Store is a great option, with tax-free purchasing and academic discounts. The BYU Store also has a computer repair shop that is an Apple Authorized Repair Center.
On Campus Services
Other tech services at BYU.

BYU WiFi
There are two WiFi networks you can connect to as a student. The first is the "BYU Secure" network with password "byuwireless". The new network that BYU has started using in select buildings is called Eduroam. To log on to this network you will use BYU netID and password. However, put your username in the format: netid@byu.edu.

BYU Printing
There are open access printers all across campus that allow you to print directly from your laptop.  After you download the print driver, you can access any of these printers. Just swipe your ID card at the printer!
Announcements

1. Become a Research Assistant. Project MEDIA is a longitudinal research study aimed at finding the relationship between media and human development. No experience needed, and the housing is substantially subsidized. We take a dozen or so RA’s to Denver every summer to collect data.

2. Join the Pre-Business Student Association. Do you think that you want to do something in business, but you're not sure what? Do you want to improve your professional skills? The Pre-Business Student Association (PBSA) helps students from across BYU campus to find their place in the business world. Sign up for our weekly email.
