Peer Mentoring
A Mentor Just for You!

You do not have to figure everything out on your own at BYU! As you begin your first year at BYU, you will be assigned a trained upperclassman as a peer mentor who will be there to answer questions, point out resources, and talk about your overall BYU experience. Participating in First-Year Mentoring will help you make the most of BYU. Learn more below:

+ Every first-year BYU student is provided with a peer mentor beginning now all the way to the end of your first full academic year.
+ Your mentor is a highly-trained upperclassman (a student just like you) who has recently been where you are now and can be your "go-to" contact for anything BYU.
+ Your peer mentor understands transitions (whether you are coming from high school, returning from a mission, or transferring from another school), what it takes to succeed at the university, and is very familiar with campus resources. They will help you find your place at BYU and make the most of your first year.
+ Your peer mentor will send you weekly emails to help you be aware of upcoming deadlines, practical tips, and campus happenings. They will also meet with you one-on-one, in person or through Zoom. They can be a friend, guide, offer study tips, and just listen.

+ Your first peer mentor is also known as a "pre-arrival" mentor. Hopefully you are already in contact with them now. If you don't know who they are, find out here or send us an email at firstyearmentoring@byu.edu
+ If you are serving as a missionary, you will be contacted by a pre-arrival mentor upon returning home.

First-Year Classes
Seats Saved for You

During your first year you are expected to fulfill your First-Year Writing and American Heritage General Education requirements. The First-Year Mentoring Program holds seats in these and other high-demand GE classes for new students.

To add a mentored class go to MyMap > Register > find the semester you are registering for > if it is prior to your registration date click on "cart" > "Add an Envelope" > select "MENTORING" as the envelope type > choose the class you want to add and add it to your schedule as normal.

Transfer Credit Types
What credits will transfer?

BYU makes considerable effort to accept all college-level courses taught at other schools. However, each institution has a unique curriculum and transfer acceptance may vary. Look at the information below to find out how your courses will transfer to BYU.

AP/IB Tests
You may receive some credit for Advanced Placement scores of 3, 4, 5, and Higher Level International Baccalaureate scores 5, 6, or 7. To know if you can receive credit for a specific BYU course, view the Exam Guides HERE.

At the time of testing you had the option of sharing your scores with BYU. If you did this BYU should have received your results and any credits received will be shown on your progress report on MyMap. If you did not do this at the time of testing you still have the option of sending your scores to BYU. Click HERE for more information about AP/IB Tests.

College Transfer Credit
Select your previous institution from the Transfer Guides by School. If your school is not on the list you will need to fill out a Transfer Evaluation Request.

Transfer Verification
How do I check to see if my credits transferred?

1) Check MyMAP > Student Summary > My Progress Report

2) BYU requires transcripts from any institution you attended before. AP/IB scores should also show up on your Progress Report. If you need to add an AP/IB score, call 801-422-8522 or stop by the Registrar’s office (B-150 ASB), and they can help you pull up your score.

3) Talk to your college advisement center for evaluation of transfer work that might fill major requirements.
