Hey Cougars,

Your major is your choice area of study. This newsletter will focus on how you can determine your major and how to plan your classes. Read to the end for a link to the announcement from BYU regarding registration dates for fall classes. Enjoy!
Majors
What do I want to study?

BYU has 180 different majors! This means you have plenty of options as you decide what to study. The first step in starting your program is declaring your major. You may change or declare your major online via MyMAP. Look in the Tools section on the left hand side and click “Change Major”.

If you’re wondering what majors are available, check out the list below. Some majors are open enrollment, while others require a formal application. Check out the list for details.

But what if I don't know?

If you don't know what you want to study, don't worry! You have some time and it’s important to gather information about yourself and about BYU majors in order to make a solid decision. It’s also good to know that, if necessary, you can change your major as you learn more about yourself, your interests and abilities.

The University Advisement Center has advisors who are trained to help you make and, if needed, re-evaluate your original decision. They can also help you with class planning strategies while you are undecided.

Here are a few ideas to consider:
+ Take courses that fulfill general education requirements – often students will discover their major in a GE class.
+ Begin by taking introductory classes or pre-requisites for the major you are interested in.
+ Take a look at all of the majors and emphases offered at BYU and begin to narrow down your list of possibilities.
+ Talk to family and friends and ask them how they made their decision.
+ Enroll in Student Development 117.
+ Make an appointment to talk to an advisor at the University Advisement Center.
+ Visit BYU’s Careers and Experiential Learning website to explore potential careers and majors

What classes should I take?

Each major has a Major Academic Plan (MAP)  that recommends when to take which courses. That way no requirements sneak up on you, allowing you to graduate on time.

Planning ahead will help you fulfill all the requirements for your major and will save you stress as you approach graduation.

On MyMap you can use the Plan Courses tab to record your plan. Select the course area you are planning, find the course you want to take, click "plan" on the right hand side, and select the semester or term you want to take the course. You can remove planned courses by hitting the trashcan button. Planning courses on MyMap does not add them to your schedule, but it can be helpful for you as you make your schedule each semester. To view your planned courses click on "View Planned Courses" in the toolbox on the right hand side.

Announcement

Earlier this week BYU made an important announcement about fall registration.

Fall registration will not start on June 1st as previously scheduled. This means the class sections currently in all registration carts will become invalid and expire this Friday, May 29th. Priority registration for fall semester has been delayed to July 6. You will be assigned a new priority registration date and cart submission deadline. You will be notified of your priority registration date via YMessage once the date has been determined, as well as when you can start saving classes to your cart again using the updated class schedule. You will be able to see the classes you had previously saved to your cart by viewing your cart history.
